What If I Don’t Have a Closet?
When Matt and I first got married, we lived in a 341 square foot, one bedroom garage apartment. What it lacked in space, it made up for in charm. That’s how I choose to look back at it, but at the time, I was keenly aware of how little space we truly had. This was especially true when I would crawl under the bed to access my clothes.
While I did my best to pare down my wardrobe before moving in, I still had far too many garments for one small closet, and Matt took up most of it with his suits and dress shirts. So, we had to get creative because not only was closet space in short supply, so was floor space. Below are just a few suggestions on how to make the most of your limited space while still providing the proper care for your clothes.[node:summary]
- Under the bed. Invest in baskets or storage containers with lids and place things like jeans, sweaters, knit items, bed linens, and shoes inside. This is a great way to keep things organized, protected, and out of the way.
- Hanging racks. If you have plenty of floor space and lots of clothing that requires hangers, this is a great option. You could get mobile racks with or without wheels, or you can mount rods or pipes to the wall to create a makeshift closet. If you don’t want to have your clothing on display, you could hang another rod for curtains to create a fabric ‘door’.
- Shelving. Make use of wall space by installing shelves from floor to ceiling. You could also install a rod-shelf combo close to the ceiling. That way you will have both shelf storage as well as hanging space for your long pieces of clothing.
- Add furniture. Currently in my kitchen, I have an antique dresser that Matt refinished. In it, I store all my table linens and tablecloths. The same thing can be done with a unique piece of furniture in your bedroom or another strategic location. Store things like socks and t-shirts inside. If you have room for a larger piece, you could purchase a wardrobe for your hanging items.
