One day a week Gray’s school holds Chapel services, so the students must wear a more formal uniform on that day.  In the 5th grade, the boy’s uniform changes from a polo shirt and sweater vest to a dress shirt and a tie.  Gray had worn a tie before but never for a solid 8 hours, so when I picked him up that first Chapel day, he was frantically trying to remove his tie and unbutton his shirt before getting the backdoor closed.  **Cough, cough** ** gag** “Mom, I’m going to choke to death,” he exclaimed.

Ten-year-old boys aren’t the only ones to complain about the snugness of their shirt collar, and problems with the collar area aren’t the only complaints with men’s dress shirts.  We did some investigating and found that there are four areas where men struggle to find a proper fit with the dress shirt.

  1. Collar – It’s either too large or too small, and the wearer isn’t the only one that can notice.  If your shirt bunches up when you put on your tie, it’s too big.  If your neck feels and looks pinched by the fabric, then it’s too tight.  For a proper fit, you should be able to place two fingers behind the top button after it’s buttoned.
  2. Sleeve – If you’re wearing a jacket and cannot see the cuff of your shirt, then it’s too short.  Likewise, if your cuff covers part of your palm, then it’s too long.  The sleeve should come down to the large wrist bone at the base of your pinky finger and should, under a jacket, show about one half of an inch.
  3. Body – Indicators of a shirt that’s too tight – buttons that do not lay flat against the body, puckering fabric around the buttons when standing, and inability to fully extend your arms forward.  A shirt that’s too large will have extra fabric around the torso, making it bunch up when you try to tuck it in.
  4. Length - Your shirt does not need to come down to your knees; extra fabric in the length can lead to bulkiness when you try to tuck it in.  If you can raise your hand above your head and your shirt stays tucked in, then it’s long enough.
