A Cleaner World Blog

I’ve seen so many articles out there that say crazy things like don’t wash your jeans or place your jeans in the freezer to get rid of the microbes. I say ick. Just like any garment that rubs against your skin, your jeans are exposed to the perspiration your body produces as well as dead skin cells rubbing against the inside of the fabric along with the bacteria and microbes out in public. Plus, if you put them away dirty and let them sit in the closet for a while, moths and other critters could start munching on the fibers.

How Often Should You Wash Your Jeans?

All garments need to be cleaned. In the Helpful Hints section of our website, we created an infographic and general guidelines to follow when it comes to how often you should wash or dry clean certain garments. Related to blue jeans, we offer the following advice:

Jeans, wash or dry clean after 2-3 wearings unless it is hot out, you’ve been sweating, or there is visible dirt. On a side note, dry cleaning is the best way to keep your jeans from fading or losing color.

It’s true, dry cleaning does reduce the chance for color loss when it comes to blue jeans, but keep in mind that dry cleaning alone does not remove water soluble stains; A Cleaner World would use the appropriate spotting agent to remove any stains.

Another care option is to machine wash your jeans in cold water and hang them to dry. This is how I care for my jeans – usually after 1 – 2 wearings. After they are completely dry, I run a warm iron over them to remove wrinkles. Washing in cold water and allowing to drip dry keeps the color from fading so quickly, and I never have issues with shrinkage. Plus, I have several pairs of jeans that are 8+ years old, and they still look terrific.
