A Cleaner World Blog

I am always cold, so after years of sitting inside a building shivering, I have learned to carry a sweater with me no matter where I go, and for each season I have a couple universal sweaters that get carried around.  These sweaters were strategically purchased to provide the right amount of warmth based on the season and to appropriately accompany any ensemble without looking too unsightly.  So, naturally I was a bit disappointed when I discovered a small hole in one of those particularly important sweaters.

The disappointment was mostly because I had to figure something else out for that day, but I knew it could be repaired.  If you have a special garment with a hole, don’t write it off.  Depending on the size and condition of the area, as well as the fabric of the garment, it could be a candidate for one of the following reweaving methods.

  • The French or Invisible Weave is used on select fabrics with small holes, tears, or burns.  Individual threads from hidden areas, like a cuff or inseam, are woven together by hand.  This creates new fabric as it closes the hole, and the repair is virtually indistinguishable.  There are, however, some fabrics that don’t lead to completely invisible results.
  • Inweaving is used for larger tears or holes.  The weaver cuts a patch of hidden fabric and places it over the damaged area, matching the fabric’s pattern.  The frayed edges are then hand woven into the material, and the edges of the repair are invisible to the eye.
  • Reknitting, which is like the French Weave, involves taking hidden strands from sweaters, double knits, and wool knits and knitting them into the damaged area.  Great care is used to ensure the pattern matches the garment’s weave and style.

Sadly, not every garment can be repaired using one of these methods.  Plus, it can be a time-consuming process and costly solution.  But A Cleaner World believes it’s always at least worth investigating.  If you have a favorite garment with a hole, bring it by one of our locations.  We might just be able to help you save it.
