The Importance of Caring for Your Vacuum Cleaner
As fastidious as I am about most things, something I tend to neglect is my vacuum cleaner. I can’t tell you how many times my mom has come to visit me, noticed the vacuum cleaner sitting in the laundry room with a canister full of dirt, and scolds me. But the truth is, she’s right. In order to have a properly functioning vacuum cleaner, you need to take care of it; otherwise, you’re just moving dust and dirt around.
How to Make Your Vacuum Cleaner and Last Longer
- Replace the bag/empty the canister regularly. This is the easiest piece of upkeep you’ll ever do on your vacuum cleaner, and don’t wait until it’s full to do it. Most new machines that have bags have an indicator light to let you know it’s time to install a new bag, but if your machine doesn’t, replace the bag when it is 2/3 full. My canister vacuum has a line that shows when it’s time to empty, and I don’t just dump the contents, I also use my husband’s air compressor to blow out small bits of dust and debris. If your vacuum cleaners suction isn’t as strong as it should be, this is the first thing to check.
- Provide routine maintenance. First, check the brush roll and remove any items that have gotten wrapped around it. Second, check the belt that keeps the brush roll in place. If it is loose, stretched, or frayed, then it’s time to replace it. Third, if your vacuum cleaner has a filter, remove it to clean or simply purchase a new one. Finally, check the hoses to make sure there are no cracks or holes.
Keep Your Vacuum Looking Brand New
I have a very handy husband, and recently I noticed that the hose on my Dyson vacuum cleaner had a couple cracks in it. In just a few minutes time, he’d ordered a replacement part, it arrived the next day, and that night he installed the new hose. While he was at it, he performed the preventative maintenance mentioned above, and my vacuum cleaner is working as it did when I first got it. But if you aren’t handy, no worries; just Google vacuum repair shops in your area. Most are pretty inexpensive and can have your vacuum cleaner fixed within a couple days. Just be sure to read the reviews and do you due diligence before making a commitment.
