How to Keep Laundry Under Control

If I skip even one day of doing laundry, I end up regretting it the next day.  For a family of three, we seem to produce a lot of dirty clothing.  On a typical day, I dirty a set of running clothes, a set of regular clothing, two bath towels, two washcloths, and a set of pajamas.  Gray produces more dirty clothing than I – probably because he’s not the one doing laundry.  It’s clear he’s my child because he doesn’t like to be dirty.

Then there’s Matt, who on the weekend, depending on how hot it is and the number of grimy projects, can dirty several pair of jeans and 2-3 t-shirts per day.  That doesn’t include towels, underclothes, and lounging pants.

Keeping Laundry at a Manageable Level

• Address stains immediately.  Throwing everything in the laundry basket without addressing spills will cause two issues.  First, it will leave you with several garments to work on when it’s time to wash a full load.  Second, spills and stains are more likely to be removed if you address them immediately.  
• Pre-sort as you go.  I realize it’s easier to throw everything in a single basket and deal with it later.  The problem with that is you typically end up being the only one to sort.  If you keep a divided hamper in your laundry room and teach your kids and spouse to sort as they bring in dirty laundry, it will save you the time of having to do it yourself.  Plus, you’ll be able to see which group needs a wash.
• Wash at least one load per day.  If you put laundry off for a few days, suddenly you’re stuck at home doing a marathon laundry session.  One load typically takes an hour and a half to wash, dry, and fold.  That’s not so bad.  Throw a load in the washer first thing in the morning or before you start dinner; you’ll be amazed at how it much easier it will be to stay ahead of the game.
• See it all the way through.  I have a friend that’s good about keeping her dirty laundry caught up; however, when the dryer is finished, she simply throws the dry clothes onto an oversized chair in her bedroom.  I bet she has 4-5 unfolded loads piled up at any given time.   When I discovered this, I then understood why she looked disheveled all the time.  Crumpled clothes lead to wrinkles.
• Delegate.  I realize this is easier said than done, especially when you have a plan of attack in mind.  Kids and spouses have a habit of having their own agendas. My delegatees aren’t as fastidious about most things, but in particular laundry, as I.  So, now when I think delegate, I think of A Cleaner World.
